A precise Zurich banker. A journey across Europe she keeps postponing. The Switch by Ralph Johnson is a quiet, cinematic novel about the trips we put off, the lives we almost choose, and the single moment that asks us to decide what really matters.

In Conversation
A short interview with Ralph Johnson
Where did The Switch begin?
With an image rather than a plot: a woman walking down a wet platform in the Pyrenees, pulling a suitcase toward a station that was built for thousands and now waits for a handful. I wanted to know who she was and what had brought her there.
Why a banker?
Because Margaux’s world rewards exactly the qualities that make it hard to stop. Precision, reliability, always being the one who stays late: they are virtues, until they quietly become the whole of a life. I wanted a heroine who is very good at her work, not one who hates it.
Trains feel almost like a character. Why rail travel?
A train journey gives you time you can’t fill with anything else. You watch the country change through glass; you talk to people you’ll never see again. It is the opposite of the way Margaux lives, and that friction drives the book.
And Canfranc is real: an enormous international station on the French–Spanish border. Standing there, you can see both the ambition and the interruption in the same stone.
Who is this book for?
Anyone who has ever said “next year” about something that mattered. Readers who like quiet novels: books where the weather and the silences carry as much as the dialogue.
What are you working on next?
Another journey. I’ll share more here when it’s ready.
